Ōamaru’s little penguins have not been moved into a display tank.
They come back from the sea on their own, cross the rock slope, and enter the harbour-side nesting area. What Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony does is keep people fixed on the viewing platform and manage light, distance, and interpretation so little penguins, Eudyptula minor, can return home on their own route.

How to get there
The official address is 17 Waterfront Road. It is about 5 minutes by car from central Ōamaru, about 3.5 hours south from Christchurch, and about 1.5 hours north from Dunedin.
For country context, read penguins in New Zealand. Ōamaru is one of the easiest South Island wild-viewing scenes to fit into a trip.
The centre opens daily at 10:00. During the day, visitors can enter the Discovery Centre. Evening viewing follows sunset: from October to March it usually begins between 19:00 and 21:00, and from April to September usually between 17:00 and 18:30. The official site reminds visitors to dress warmly; even summer evenings can be cold.
How evening viewing works
The official page lists general viewing at NZ$47 for adults. Seats are about 10 to 15 meters from the penguins, while Premium viewing is closer.
As at Phillip Island, avoiding disturbance is central. The official plan-your-visit page says cameras and recording devices are not allowed during Evening Viewing. Little penguins are nocturnal on land, and light or image-chasing can change their landing rhythm.

A wild colony inside a city harbour
What makes Ōamaru unusual is how urban the location feels. Harbour, car park, old warehouses, viewing platform, and penguin nesting area all sit close together.
That distance makes management visible. Nest boxes, research facilities, landing routes, audience seating: every piece is arranged so people and penguins do not collide. Official material also notes long-term conservation and research work, not just night viewing.
If you want to extend the theme into individual behavior, read penguins have personalities too. During the night return, each little penguin’s pauses, following behavior, and speed into burrows are not identical.
During breeding season, nest boxes and long-term research also bring up pair bonds, divorce, and site fidelity. Pair this with do penguins mate for life? for the messier version of the story.

Nearby comparison
New Zealand’s South Island also has more sensitive wild-viewing sites for yellow-eyed penguins, Fiordland penguins, and others. Those usually require more distance, guiding, or closed routes.
Ōamaru works well for a first wild little penguin visit because access is easy, rules are clear, and the evening platform is stable. It does not give visitors the feeling of free approach. That is exactly why it can keep operating.
