Shedd Aquarium’s penguin area is not loud.
The official Polar Play Zone description centers the underwater view: you see Magellanic penguins and rockhopper penguins walk, hop, build nests, and flash past the glass.
Putting these two species in one route is good eye training. Magellanic penguins have a smoother body shape and a clear black band across the chest; rockhoppers are smaller, noisier, and the yellow crest always looks as if it is warning people not to underestimate them.

What to see
Shedd’s advantage is that its interpretation material is strong. Official species pages tell you Magellanic penguins can chase fish underwater at about 15 miles per hour, and explain how rockhopper penguins use small stones to build nests.
If children are coming along, Polar Play Zone’s child-focused design softens the pace. Adults can stand at the underwater glass and watch how a clumsy land bird becomes a fast swimmer.
This site and Georgia Aquarium are both U.S. city aquariums, but Shedd’s species pairing is better for comparing South American and sub-Antarctic penguins.
To put Magellanic penguins back into wild breeding context, continue to Punta Tombo or Magdalena Island.

How to plan it
Shedd sits on Museum Campus and is easy to pair with the Field Museum and Adler Planetarium in one day. The penguin area does not have to come first, but it deserves time to stop.
Penguin Encounter is an add-on experience arranged according to animal condition and availability. General visitors do not need an encounter to see penguins.
If you place U.S. facilities on one line, Detroit’s Polk Penguin Conservation Center is scale; Shedd is close observation.

Penchan Says
Shedd rewards slow looking.
Stand there a little longer, and the most interesting part is not that the penguins are cute. It is that one exhibit pool contains two body languages.
