London Zoo Penguin Beach: Humboldt and Lubetkin Guide — London, 英國 — 1 penguin species on site

London Zoo’s penguins have a clear time split.

What you see today is the Humboldt penguin at Penguin Beach. It is one of England’s large penguin pools, with 450,000 liters of water, a South American coastal design, underwater viewing, and feeding talks.

The other shadow is the Penguin Pool designed in 1934 by Berthold Lubetkin and Tecton Group. That white spiral ramp no longer houses penguins, but it remains inside the zoo like an old debate about animal welfare and architectural beauty.

What to see

Humboldt penguins come from the coasts of Peru and Chile. Their issue is not surviving extreme cold, but heat loss, fishing, and finding suitable nest burrows. London’s exhibit combines sand, rocky shore, and deep water, letting them swim and come ashore to preen.

Penguin Beach Live, the daily feeding, is a moment regular ticket holders can see. Meet the Penguins is an add-on if you want to get closer.

Architecture fans can also walk over to the Lubetkin Penguin Pool. It was once a modernist star, but left its original use because of issues including concrete surfaces and animal foot health.

How to plan it

London Zoo is in Regent’s Park, and the grounds are not small. The penguin area works well in the morning or around feeding time, before it becomes only a wall of people.

If you want to pair two European representative sites, read Edinburgh Zoo next. London is Humboldt penguins and architecture history; Edinburgh is king, gentoo, rockhopper, and parade tradition.

For city travel, this is easier to arrange than many distant wild sites. But easy access does not mean you can skip checking same-day hours.

Penchan Says

What makes London Zoo interesting is that it puts present and past inside the same zoo.

On one side are Humboldt penguins still swimming. On the other is a classic building that no longer serves its old purpose. It naturally raises the question: is a beautiful exhibit necessarily good for the animal?
